The Affenpinscher breed is one of the oldest toy breeds. This canine’s original function was to hunt small vermin and be the mistress’s lap dog. The breed was most popular in Germany, which can lay claim as its homeland.
Temperament
The Affenpinscher is a terrier at heart
with a temperament that is bold, stubborn, and inquisitive. It tends to
bark and even climb like a monkey. Unlike its terrier counterparts, it is
fairly good with other animals including other dogs.
Upkeep and Health
This breed may be energetic and
playful and its exercise requirements can be fulfilled with small romping
games or some type of vigorous games. Its harsh coat should be combed 2-3
times a week.
There are no major health concerns. Minor health issues include patellar luxation, corneal ulcers.
Basenji Dog

The Basenji was discovered in the African Congo with Pygmy hunters. They were used as Basenji Dog Breed Picturepack hunters driving game into nets. Once introduced to America, the breed’s popularity as a pet and show dog rose steadily. It retains several of its primitive characteristics such as a lack of barking ability and its yearly rather than twice yearly, estrus cycle.
Upkeep and Health
The Basenji usually does best as
an indoor dog with access to a yard. Care of its coat is minimal with only
occasional brushing being necessary.
Major health concerns include Fanconi syndrome, PRA, and Basenji enteropathy.

Bichon Frise Dog Breed
The origins of the Bichon Frise started with a breed of dogs known as barbicans. Its popularity fluctuated through the years barely surviving through history right up until World War II. It was not until it came to America in the 1950′s that the breed became more secure and popular. Even at that time it really did not become popular until its grooming was updated and it received more publicity in the 1960′s.
Temperament
The Bichon Frise has a happy and perky
attitude the endears them to all. It is sweet and affectionate and gets
along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. It does not like to
be left alone and prefers to be with people all the time. It likes to
cuddle as much as it likes to play.
Upkeep and Health
Although small in size, the Bichon
Frise needs lots of exercise and daily activity. A vigorous romp or a
short walk on a leash will suffice. The powder pull coat should be brushed
every other day. It does not shed but the coat can get entangled and mat.
This is not an outside dog.
Major health concerns include patellar luxation, Cushing’s, and allergies.

The origin of the Boston Terrier goes back to around 1865 when the coachmen of wealthy people began to breed some of their employer’s dogs with various other breeds. One of these crosses – between a Bulldog and an English Terrier, was the beginning of what would one day develop into the Boston Terrier. By 1889, the breed had become popular in Boston and the American Bull Terrier Club was formed. Shortly after this, the name was changed to the Boston Terrier. It ranked as one of the most popular breeds in the early to middle 1900s and still is a hugely popular breed.

The Brussels Griffon’s origins are the country of Belgium. They were used to guard cabs in Brussels, although it was thought they probably were more likely to attract fares than discouraging criminals. The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog with varying theories of its origin and history. Ranging from China to Spain and South America. In 1850, three were found in Chihuahua, Mexico. A few were then imported to the United States but did not become popular at the very beginning. They started gaining popularity when Xavier Cugat – a rhumba king celebrity – appeared in public with his constant canine companion – a Chihuahua. It was at that time its popularity took off and it has been popular ever since.

The Chinese Crested breed originated in Africa and was brought to China in the thirteenth century. They were kept on ships to control rats and were sometimes traded and hence distributed to various countries. The French Bulldog was a fairly popular breed in England back in the 19th century migrating to France with people searching for work in the mid 1800′s. They soon gained popularity in Paris. By the late 1800′s, they become popular with the upper class and also with American’s visiting the country. They gained in popularity and by 1913 the French Bulldog was one of the most popular show dogs in America.

The Havanese originated in the Mediterranean in ancient times. Spanish traders eventually brought them to Cuba where they were adored by the wealthy and lived a pampered life. They made their way to Europe where they were nicknamed the White Cuban. They soon became popular in Europe as a pet for the elite as well as becoming popular performance dogs often performing in circuses as trick dogs. They are fairly new to the AKC circuit, its first showing being in 1996. It is also known as the Havana Silk Dog.

This breed was developed by a man by the name of John Russell who was looking for a dog breed that could keep pace with horses and could bolt and dispatch fox for the purpose of fox hunting. Jack Russells are popular with horse owners and you will frequently find them on farms and in stables. In 2003 their name was officially changed from Jack Russell Terrier to Parson Russell Terrier. Their popularity has grown over the years, partly due to their visibility in the media – such as Frazier with his father’s companion “Eddie”.

The Lhasa Apso has a history entwined with Buddhist beliefs. They believed that the souls of lamas entered the sacred dog’s bodies when they died. It is now a very popular pet and shows dogs.

The Miniature Pinscher – also referred to as a Min Pin – is, some are shocked to learn, not a miniature version of the larger Doberman Pinscher. Dog experts surmise they are a result of crossing a small short-haired terrier and a Dachshund and Italian Greyhound. They possess the coloring of the German Pinscher, the elegance and grace of the Italian Greyhound, and the fearlessness commonly found in the Dachshund. It was acknowledged by the AKC in 1929 and is presently one of the more popular toy breeds in America.

This tiny breed was popular with nobility back in the 16th century and its popularity quickly spread to Spain and Italy. The Pekingese breed was once referred to as the lion dogs. At the height of their popularity, many of these dogs were treated like royalty and even were assigned their own personal servants. The Pomeranian ancestors were a much larger version we see today, weighing as much as thirty pounds and often were white in color. Although recognized as a breed in 1870 by the English Kennel Club, it was only after Queen Victoria brought one from Italy that the breed became more popular. By 1900, the Pomeranian was recognized by the AKC and they were shown in an array of colors. It is now a very popular pet and shows a dog and its size has been bred down to its current weight span of 4 to 6 pounds most commonly seen with tannish or brownish coat color.

The Tibetan Spaniel’s origins are based on Tibetan Buddhist beliefs. These small dogs were bred by monks in monasteries which usually breed only the smallest dogs. The breed did not make it to the US until the 1960′s.
